Task 2: What are social media tools?

Social media tools are many and varied. There are the platforms and then there are the analytical tools that help you gather data - such as how many 'hits' your website is getting. The platforms most commonly used in libraries include Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, Pinterest, Tumblr, e-newletters plus many library and personal blogs. All these platforms are quite varied and used  for different purposes or to suit the user's needs.

Five different social media tools are:

Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/

Facebook is the most commonly used social media platform in the world. Users have their own web page which can be set to interactive with friends, family and - via privacy settings - with anyone else. They can be personal pages, business pages and 'group' or 'discussion' pages.

Pinterest
https://www.pinterest.com.au/

Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board where people can 'pin' images. These can be of anything at all, as long as it is an image and they also have a link to a website, either personal or commercial. Some people use Pinterest as a tool to bookmark things they come across while surfing the internet.

Youtube
https://www.youtube.com/

Youtube is a video/audio-sharing website which allows users to upload, view, comment and share (to other social media platforms) user-generated or commercially-made videos (of anything at all - except sexually explicit or extremely violent content) to the platform. Youtube is also a music streaming service like Spotify and Apple Music but does not cost anything and allows users to leave comments. Advertisements are  attached to the videos which generate income for the copyright owners (after Youtube takes their cut).

Tumblr
https://www.tumblr.com/

Tumble is like a cross between Instagram, Twitter and Facebook where users upload multimedia (images, content) to a short-form blog which they can set to private or public. Users can also follow each other's pages which are  accessed via a 'dashboard' interface.

Mailchimp
https://mailchimp.com/

Mailchimp is a platform where users can create e-newsletters for both personal and business uses, which involves their email marketing service. It has a relatively user-friendly interface so practically anyone - even without prior experience - can create an e-newsletter (or a 'marketing automation
platform' as Mailchimp likes to call it).
